Background: EIGHTY-FOUR COMPETITORS FROM SIX COUNTRIES - BRITAIN, NORWAY, DENMARK, FRANCE, BELGIUM AND HOLLAND - ARE TAKING PART IN THE FIRST BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SHARK ANGLING FESTIVAL AT LOOE, CORNWALL.

ON OCTOBER 3 - THE FIRST DAY OF THE 3-DAY EVENT - THE INTREPID FISHERMEN SET OUT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL SHARK ANGLING COMPETITION. MICHEL FUCHS OF FRANCE WAS ADJUDGED THE WINNER AFTER CATCHING A 111-POUND 'BLUE' SHARK. THIS WAS SAID TO BE ALONG WAY FROM THE RECORD BUT WAS NOT SURPRISING AS SO MANY ANGLERS WERE FISHING AT THE SAME TIME - THE SHARKS RECEIVED FAIR WARNING OF THEIR PRESENCE.

ANOTHER REASON FOR THE SCARCITY OF SHARKS WAS THOUGHT TO BE BECAUSE THERE HAD BEEN LITTLE SHARK FISHING RECENTLY OWING TO ROUGH WEATHER, AND THERE HAS BEEN LESS SHARK BAIT IN THE AREA TO ATTRACT THEM.

FISHERMEN ATTRACT THE SHARKS BY PLACING A "RUBBY-DUBBY" BAG OVER THE SIDE OF THE BOAT. THIS IS A BAG OF PILCHARDS THAT IS BANGED INTO A PULP AND THEN SHAKEN ABOUT IN THE WATER. THIS SAVOURY 'LURE' SHOULD SOOM BRING ALL THE EVER-HUNGRY SHARKS IN THE LOCALITY.

A STOUT FISHING HOOK IS THEN BAITED WITH A PILCHARD AND THE HOPEFUL WAIT BEGINS. THE FRENZIED STRUGGLE PUT UP BY THE SHARK NEEDS ALL THE SKILL AND STRENGTH OF THE ANGLER BUT THE RAZOR-TOOTHED MONSTER OF A FISH IS LANDED - AND UP GOES THE YELLOW FLAG TO SIGNAL ANOTHER SUCCESS.
