Background: JOHN EDRICH, THE YOUNG LEFT-HANDED BATSMAN FROM NORFOLK SAVED ENGLAND FROM A DISASTROUS START IN THEIR FIRST INNINGS IN THE SECOND TEST AGAINST AUSTRALIA AT LORD'S CRICKET GROUND TODAY (MONDAY). ENGLAND CAME OUT TO BAT WITH A SCORE OF 26 FOR THE LOSS OF ONE WICKET IN REPLY TO AUSTRALIA'S FIRST INNINGS TOTAL OF 176. HAWKE AND MCKENZIE OPENED THE BOWLING FOR THE VISITORS AND IN THIRTY-FIVE BRIEF MINUTES HAD CAPTURED THE WICKETS OF TWO OF ENGLAND'S LEADING BATSMEN - COWDREY AND BARRINGTON.

THE SCORE AT THIS STAGE WAS THREE FOR FORTY-TWO AND ENGLAND SEEMED TO BE HEADING FOR AN EVEN MORE DISASTROUS INNINGS THAN AUSTRALIA SUFFERED AT THE HANDS OF TRUEMAN AND DEXTER ON SATURDAY.

EDRICH, CELEBRATING HIS TWENTY-SEVENTH BIRTHDAY TODAY, PULLED THE ENGLISH SIDE TOGETHER. TREATING THE ACCURATE AUSTRALIAN BOWLING WITH RESPECT HE HARDLY PUT A FOOT WRONG IN THE FIVE-AND-A-QUARTER HOURS HE SPENT AT THE WICKET. DURING THIS TIME HE BATTED SOLIDLY TO A SCORE OF 120 BEFORE A BALL FROM MCKENZIE FLEW OFF HIS BAT INTO THE HANDS OF REDPATH AT SECOND SLIP. IT WAS A GRAND INNINGS - AND ONE THAT DELIGHTED THE CROWD, ESPECIALLY TOWARDS ITS CLOSE AS EDRICH DROVE A BALL OVER THE HEAD OF MID-OFF TO THE BOUNDARY.

WITH EDRICH DISMISSED THE ENGLAND INNINGS WAS NEARLY OVER. "FIERY FRED" TRUEMAN - NEVER A GREAT RUN MAKER, BUT ALWAYS A POPULAR CHARACTER, THRILLED THE CROWD WITH A GLORIOUS SIX INTO THE GRANDSTAND. HE WAS DISMISSED TRYING TO DUPLICATE THE SHOT ON THE NEXT BALL.

SHARPE AND PARFITT WERE THE ONLY TWO BATSMEN OTHER THAN EDRICH TO MAKE AN IMPRESSION ON THE AUSTRALIAN BOWLING. SHARPE SCORED 35 BEFORE HE WAS LBW TO HAWKE. PARFITT, BRILLIANT IN HIS RUNNING BETWEEN THE WICKET, FELL VICTIM TO CORLING WHEN HE REACHED 20.

AUSTRALIA OPENED THEIR SECOND INNINGS WITH LAWRY AND REDPATH BATTING. AT STUMPS THEY HAS SCORED 49 RUNS FOR THE LOSS OF ONLY ONE WICKET - THAT OF LAWRY WHO EDGED A BALL FROM GIFFORD STRAIGHT INTO THE HANDS OF THE WAITING DEXTER.

THERE IS ONLY ONE DAY OF PLAY REMAINING.
