Background: Schools and colleges in the Malagasy Republic have re-opened after being closed since April following a general strike and subsequent unrest. Initially the strike was in support of medical students' demands for better conditions. But in May, 34 people died and 370 student leaders were arrested during widespread riots. The government of General Gabriel Ramanantsoa, which replaced that of President Philibert Tsirinana, has agreed to remove servicemen from teaching positions, and has also begun replacing French as the language in schools with Malagasy, the natural tongue. But even as children and students returned to class, demonstrators were demanding that schools currently reserved for the education of foreigners should be turned over to public education.
