Background: An oil slick caused by a mistake aboard a United States navy vessel has hit the beaches of San Diego, USA. More than 200 sailors and marines are cleaning up oil deposits from beaches at San Clemente -- including the beach of President Nixon's western White House, where the President and Mrs Nixon are at present on holiday.
So far no wildlife has been affected by the 35-mile (56 kilometre) long slick, but the California game and fish department say the fish are still in danger. The oil was dumped into the sea last Friday (20 August) after refuelling operations.
