    TRANSCRIPT

SEQ 4 I LIVED TWO YEARS IN THE STATES, AND LAST TIME I WENT THERE AND LIFE WAS EASY, YOU KNOW. LIFE WAS MUCH EASIER, YOU CAN'T COMPARE IT TO LIFE HERE. YOU CAN BUY YOURSELF A BIG PLACE, LIVE A GOOD LIFE, GOOD WORKING NOT VERY DIFFICULT: HERE MONEY DOESN'T HAVE ANY VALUE AND IT'S A BIT DIFFICULT LIVING AND WORKING HERE. THOUGH WE ARE ATTACHED HERE, IT'S OUR HOME, AND WE CAN'T LIVE THAT, YOU KNOW, WE CAN'T GO AND FORGET ABOUT ISRAEL IT'S IMPOSSIBLE.

SEQ 17 THE ISSUE OF JEWISH IMMIGRATION FROM ISRAEL, IS ONE OF THE MOST PAINFUL ISSUES IN ISRAEL, WE ARE TRYING TO FIGHT IT, IT'S NOT EASY HOW DO YOU FIGHT THAT KIND OF TENDENCIES. IT'S NOT EASY, FROM THE ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW. EDUCATIONAL POINT OF VIEW, THE EMPLOYMENT POINT OF VIEW, FROM ALL, FROM ALL ANGLES, I WOULD SAY. BUT BASICALLY THE YOUNG GENERATION HERE IN ISRAEL, MUST UNDERSTAND TO HAVE A SELF CONVICTION THAT THEY AND BUILD A STATE. WITHOUT THE SELF CONVICTION WE ARE GOING TO LOSE THE BATTLE:BUT I AM SURE WE ARE GOING TO WIN IT, BUT ANYHOW I CAN SAY, AND I AM SAYING THAT THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST PAINFUL PROBLEMS THAT WE ARE FACING HERE IN ISRAEL.

Background: IN GROWING NUMBERS THE CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN OF THE ZIONIST PIONEERS WHO BUILT THE JEWISH STATE OF ISRAEL FROM ITS INCEPTION IN 1948 ARE THINKING OF LEAVING THE COUNTRY. FRUSTRATED BY LOW LIVING STANDARDS, HIGH TAXES AND MUNDANE JOBS ONE IN FIVE ISRAEL UNDER 26 SAY THEY ARE CONTEMPLATING EMIGRATION, ACCORDING TO A RECENT SURVEY BY THE MINISTRY OF IMMIGRATION ABSORPTION. ALREADY AN ESTIMATED 340,000 ISRAELIS LIVE ABROAD - ABOUT NINE PER CENT OF ISRAEL'S JEWISH POPULATION. THE FIGURES HAVE FUELLED AN ANGUISHED DEBATE IN A SOCIETY FOUNDED ON JEWISH IMMIGRATION. OF MANY JEWS EMIGRATION IS AN EMOTIVE PHILOSOPHICAL CONCEPT WHICH TRANSCENDS THE MATERIAL. YOSSI KUCIK IS ADVISER ON EMIGRATION TO THE IMMIGRATION MINISTER AND IS IN CHARGE OF A GOVERNMENT PROGRAMME WITH A MILLION DOLLAR ANNUAL BUDGET TO DISCOURAGE EMIGRATION AND LURE EMIGRANTS BACK HOME BY A MIXTURE OF PROPAGANDA AND MATERIAL INCENTIVES. LAST YEAR, EMIGRANTS OUTNUMBERED NEW IMMIGRANTS FOR ONLY THE THIRD TIME IN ISRAEL'S 39-YEAR HISTORY. ABOUT 13,000 PEOPLE LEFT THE COUNTRY WHILE ONLY 9,500 CAME TO SETTLE. ABOUT A HALF OF ALL ISRAELI EMIGRANTS LIVE IN THE UNITED STATES DRAWN BY THE PROSPECTS OF BETTER SALARIES, CONSUMER AFFLUENCE AND AN EASY GOING LIFE STYLE. BUT EXPERTS ON EMIGRATION SAY THE AMERICAN DREAM HAS NOT ENTIRELY SUPPLANTED THE ZIONIST DREAM IN THE MINDS OF ISRAELI EMIGRANTS. MANY RETURN AND OBSERVERS SAY MANY JUST WANT A CHANGE FROM THE INTENSITY OF ISRAELI LIFE.
