Background: Providing a great attraction to thousands of visitors at Madras Zoo, India, recently was a newly born baby hippopotamus. Showing not the slightest inclination to wallow in mud, Hippo junior - like mother - appeared much more interested in eating whatever was available.

Mother decided later that it was time for young hippo to wash behind the ears, and so led an expedition into the water. After submerging a few times it was very pleased to emerge and find solace on dry land underneath mother. It was difficult to believe that, like her, he would probably reach a length of 14 feet, a height of 4 feet and a weight of 3 tons!
