Background: Saigon has witnessed its largest anti-Government demonstration since before the 1971 Presidential elections.

More than four-thousand people, led by militant Catholic clergymen gathered on Sunday (October 6) to protest at alleged corruption.

Speaking at the rally, one of the leaders, Father Tran Huu Thanh, called for an anti-corruption campaign within President Thieu's Government as a way to combat communism politically.

He said the country was now fighting against communism on the battlefield, but the time would come when the nation would have to fight against it on the political front.

Police did not intervene throughout the rally in keeping with a Government "hands-off" policy instituted a month ago.
