REPORTER: "Mr. Fernandez, what was the reason behind the raid on Gorongoza and the capture of John Burlinson and his Chilean colleague Moises Carril?"
FERNANDEZ: "We were noticed that Frelimo was concentrating troops in Chitengo town to attack our positions in Gorongoza hills and then we wanted to destroy these enemy troops and when the occupied Chitengo town we were informed by people that Mr. Carril and Mr. Burlinson were informers to the secret police and then they were, they were detained to investigate if they are or if they are not informers to the secret police.
"We are not supporters of Pretoria but Mobuto is supported by Pretoria because they have strong economic and commercial links with Pretoria. They receive food, spare parts, and foreign exchange currency from Pretoria. They have some thirty thousand workers in the minefields in South Africa and even the South Africans are earning Maputo harbour and Maputo railways. Who are them, the South African proxis in Southern Africa, Maputo or National Resistance? National Resistance which, in the last days destroyed again the power lines of Koborabassa, the power lines who give power to South Africa at very cheap price, Who are them the proxis? Now, we, our operational zone includes some four hundred thousand square kilometres and we are growing. Every day we are growing and more and more people is with us even in the Frelimo ranks many high-ranking officers are with us and they are connected with us and we hope that in the near future it can, we can foresee something happening in Maputo because the military are not glad with the situation in Mozambique."
