Background: A special ceremony was held in New Delhi on Thursday (2 October) to mark 111 years since the birth of Mahatma Gandhi. The preeminent leader of Indian nationalism was born in Porbandar in 1986 and was assassinated by the Hindu fanatic in 1948.

SYNOPSIS: The special commemorative service was held at the Gandhi memorial in New Delhi. Hundreds filed passed the flower-decked monument to the great Indian idealist paying their respects. During his life, Mahatma Gandhi became internationally esteemed for his doctrine of non-violence to achieve political and social progress.

Indian's Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, and members of her cabinet also took part in the memorial service. Mrs Gandhi placed flowers on the memorial and stood for a minute in silence. Though her own surname changed to Gandhi when she married, her late husband was not related to Mahatma Gandhi. She is, in fact, the daughter of the first Prime Minister of independent india, Jawaharlal Nehru. The name, mahatma, is a title given to the great Indian leader meaning "Great Soul", and indication of his enormous spiritual reputation.

Early morning prayers were held at the memorial.

Mrs Gandhi led the prayers which included both Christian hymns and recitations of the Gita or Holy Book. It's considered that Mahatma Gandhi was the catalyst if not the initiator of three major twentieth century revolutionaries; the revolutions against colonialism, racism, and violence. He wrote copiously and collected edition of his writings may run to 80 volumes.
