Background: An open inquiry possibly a Royal Commission, will investigate yesterday's riot and fire at Bathurst jail. It will examine, among other things, the possibility of outside influences having been a factory in the disturbances. In the meantime, with more than two-thirds of the Bathurst jail burnt out, all three-hundred prisoners are being transferred to other institutions throughout New South Wales. Prison authorities expect to complete the transfer by late tonight. The jail cannot be used in its present state.
