Background: Mr. John Diefenbaker, Canadian Prime Minister, described as "a tremendous experience" his 90-minute visit November 2 to Kildonan, Sutherland. His maternal great-grandfather, George Bannerman, was born there.

Mr. Diefenbaker who is on a world tour -- in particular to Asia -- made special day journey to Scotland to see his ancestor's village.

He saw the site of his great-grandfathers's home, where another house now stands. But he could not find his ancestor's gravestone, which is believed to have become overgrown.

It was in 1813, after the Bannermans, with many other families, had been evicted during the Sutherland clearances, that George Bannerman emigrated to Canada.
