    Background: KAZAKHSTAN, USSR

Soyuz T-6, the spacecraft bearing a joint Franco-Soviet crew landed successfully near the city of Arkalik in northern Kazakhstan on July 2. The craft, piloted by French Colonel Jean-Loup Chretien and Soviet cosmonauts Vladimir Dzhanibekov and Alexander Ivanchenkov, had completed a nine-day mission which included a week on board the orbiting research station Salyut-7. Colonel Chretien, 43, was the first westerner to take part in a Soviet space flight. The mission was the first East-West space venture since 1975 when a US Apollo craft linked up with an orbiting Soviet oyuz craft. Soyuz T-6 landed on solid ground after giant parachutes slowed its descent. A fleet of helicopters carried doctors to the scene as the craft landed. Minutes later medical experts were reported as saying the three were in good condition and feeling well. During the mission the crew carried out a battery of scientific experiments. In 1979 when France agreed to the venture it cited these as justification for the mission at a time of strained East-West relations over Poland and Afghanistan. All three Astronauts have been presented with the Soviet Union's highest decoration, the Order of Lenin.
