Background: Tennis, and in the first match of the 1978 Wimbledon tournament, the men's singles champion and number one seed Bjorn Borg had a tough fight with an unseeded American Victor Amaya. Amaya, who stands six foot five and a half inches tall (1.95 metres) took Borg of Sweden to five sets.
SYNOPSIS: Amaya took the first st 9-8 but lost some of his earlier form in the second set.
Borg settled down a little in the second and took it 6-1.
Borg serves in the fourth set, but still fighting to save the match. He was then two sets to one down, but went on to take the set 6-3.
By now Amaya was having trouble, and lost his service early in the fifth set.
A little later, Amaya serves to save the match he looked at one time like winning. Borg, eventually finding his form won 9-8, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3.
On Court number one, Jimmy Connors of America, the number 2 seed, clashed with Russel Simpson of New Zealand.
Simpson started well, but was no match for the young American.
Connors could show off his fine technique and eventually took the match in straight, 7-5, 9-8, 6-1.
