    Background: ISLAMABAD, PAKISTAN

Work is Islamabad on the world's largest Faisal mosque is nearing completion. The mosque is named after the Saudi Arabian king who promised in the mid-1960s to meet most of the 50 million U.S. dollar costs of construction. On January 28, the first Friday service was held, attended by several hundred people. The mosque, which was started in 1976, will be able to hold up to 100,000 people in its great hall, which will rise to a height of 46 metres (150 feet). The Nigerian president, Shehu Shagari, who was on a state visit, was scheduled to join the hundreds of worshippers at the service with Pakistan's leader, General Zia ul Haq. Among the congregation were many representatives from Moslem countries in Africa, including Ghana.
