Background: After a tense, exciting battle in Berne May 31, the "Benfica" team of Portugal beat Barcelona 3-2 and won the European Association Football Cup. The final was packed with superb play by both sides.
During the first half-hour, Barcelona - playing in white - appeared to be heading towards victory. Their brilliant forward line, continuously on the attack, made many gaps in Benfica's defence. Suarez and Kubala on the right wing headed the moves, and it was Kubala who sent a deep centre to the far post which gave Kocsis the first goal after 20 minutes.
But soon after this, Ramallets left his goal disastrously clear and Benfica's Aguas tapped it into the empty net. The score - 1-1.
Sixty seconds later, Ramallets, with the sun in his eyes, misjudged a wild clearance from right-back Foncho and it was another goal for Benfica. Nine minutes after that, Coluna shot the ball through a crowd of players to make the score 3-1 for the Portuguese team.
Czibor improved the position for Barcelona by scoring with a magnificent shot from 25 yards just 16 minutes before the end of the match. But there, despite a great last-minute effort by Barcelona, ended the game with a well earned 3-2 victory for Benfica.
