Background: Portugal's presidential election campaign enters its final week with the current president, General Antonio Eanes, favoured to win. His main opponent, General Antonio Soares Carneiro, has done poorly in public opinion polls which show him lagging far behind Eanes.

SYNOPSIS: At a political rally Thursday (November 27) near Lisbon, the Communist presidential candidate, hinted he might withdraw from the race in favour of President Eanes. Carlos Brito indicated he would possibly step down before the December seventh election. Senhor Brito accused General Carneiro of serving the Salazar dictatorship. He said Carneiro had held controversial positions in Portugal's former colonies. Senhor Brito said his main aim in running for the presidency was to defeat General Carneiro and that, if he did step down, General Eanes would be supported by the Communist Party.

However, political confusion has been increased as a result of a threat by Portugal's Prime Minister, Doctor Francisco Sa Carneiro. Doctor Sa Carneiro says that if General Carneiro, who's the government-backed candidate, loses the election, he will resign as Prime Minister. Further problems will face the voters, many illiterate, when they get their ballot papers. Those who can't read properly may have difficulty differentiating between General Soares
Carneiro and Doctor Mario Soares, the Socialist Party leader. Doctor Soares isn't running for president though many of his supporters had urged him to. Though there had been fears of serious violence, so far election clashes have been relatively minor, and it's hoped the campaign will and peacefully.
