    Background: ITAIPU DAM, BRAZIL/PARAGUAY BORDER

The Itaipu Dam, on the Parana River has been opened by the Presidents of Brazil and Paraguay. The world's most powerful hydro-electric project was opened on November 5 in a ceremony on the border between the two countries. President Alfredo Stroessner of Paraguay arrived with his wife and was greeted by President Joao Figueiredo of Brazil. The ceremony watched by hundreds of spectators, inaugurated the 14-billion dollar (US) project, which has been under construction for seven years, and is not expected to work at full capacity until 1988. The first electricity from the dam will come on stream in March next year, when the first of the 18 turbines, yet to be installed, starts operating. The dam has created a huge artificial lake, and the two Presidents - together with the head of the construction company - Mr. Costa Cavalcanti - pressed the button which opened the sluice gates and sent a spectacular flood of water down the spillways. After the ceremony, Presidents Stroessner and Figueiredo met with some of the workers who have been involved in the construction of the massive project. The joint construction is expected to lead to closer co-operation between the two countries.
