Background: 100 thousand people of all walks of life in Peking attended a rally in spite of the rain on May 12th to voice resolute endorsement of Chairman Mao Tse-tung's statement supporting the Dominican people in their struggle against US armed aggression. The rally condemned the barbarous crime of armed intervention committed by US imperialism in the Dominican Republic. Present were leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and government: Liu Chao-chi, Chou En-lai, Chu Teh, Teng Hsiao-ping, Peng Chen and others.
Kou Mo-jo, Chairman of the China Peace Committee, presided over the rally.
Mayor Peng Chen declares: 'The Dominican people's patriotic struggle against U.S. imperialism marks a new upsurge in the national-democratic movement in the Dominican Republic and the whole of Latin America. Their dauntless spirit greatly inspires the other Latin American peoples in their national-democratic revolutionary struggle and the people of the world in their struggle against U.S. imperialism.
He continues: 'The new policy of appeasement followed by the modern revisionists is inevitably opposed by the people of the whole world.
'The people of the world,' he says, 'by uniting themselves and all forces that can be united and strengthening and developing a broad anti-US united front, will surely be able to defeat the US imperialists' plans for aggression and war.'
Other speakers at the rally were:
Manuel Reed, representative of the National Union of Students of Haiti;
Nguyen Minh Phuong, acting head of the Permanent Delegation of the South Vietnam National Liberation Front; and R.K. Mwanjisi, member of the Central Committee of the Tanganyika African National Union.
A message of support was adopted at the rally in the name of the 650 million Chinese people for the patriotic Dominican soldiers and people persevering in their anti-US struggle.
