Background: A PLAN TO DECEIVE THE HIJACKERS OF A JAPANESE AIRCRAFT INTO BELIEVING THEY HAD LANDED IN NORTH KOREA FAILED WHEN THE AIRCRAFT LANDED AT SEOUL, AND THE PASSENGERS AND CREW ARE STILL HELD HOSTAGE.

ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEEN PEOPLE, PASSENGERS, CREW AND HIJACKERS, HAVE BEEN ISOLATED IN THE JAPAN AIRLINES BOEING 727 AT SEOUL'S KIMPO AIRPORT IN SOUTH KOREA SINCE IT WAS SEIZED ON A DOMESTIC FLIGHT OVER JAPAN AND FLOWN THERE LAST TUESDAY MORNING (31 MARCH). THE HIJACKERS HAD WANTED TO LAND IN NORTH KOREA.

AN ELABORATE HOAX AIMED AT CONVINCING THEM THAT THEY WERE IN NORTH KOREA, WHICH INCLUDED SOUTH KOREAN SOLDIERS DRESSED IN NORTH KOREAN MILITARY DISGUISE, FAILED TO CONVINCE THE HIJACKERS AND THEY THREATENED TO BLOW THE PLANE UP UNLESS ALLOWED TO FLY NORTH.

THE PILOT WARNED OFFICIALS BY RADIO THAT THE FIFTEEN STUDENT HIJACKERS, ARMED WITH SWORDS, PISTOLS AND EXPLOSIVES, WERE DANGEROUS AND DESPERATE AND THAT THE CREW AND PASSENGERS WANTED PERMISSION FOR THE PLANE TO FLY TO NORTH KOREA. SO FAR SOUTH KOREAN OFFICIALS HAVE REFUSED TO BOW TO THE DEMANDS OF THE HIJACKERS, DESPITE AN ASSURANCE FROM NORTH KOREA THAT PASSENGERS AND CREW WOULD BE REPATRIATED SAFELY TO JAPAN IF THEY SHOULD FLY THERE.

MEANTIME, CONDITIONS ON BOARD THE AIRCRAFT HAVE BEEN FAR FROM PLEASANT, WITH TEMPERATURES REACHING 40 DEGREES CENTIGRADE (104 F), AND TOILETS OVERFLOWING. THE PASSENGERS ARE UNEASY AND SHOWING SIGNS OF DISTRESS, BUT THE HIJACKERS DID ALLOW A LIMITED AMOUNT OF FOOD ... RAW FISH AND SANDWICHES.... AND WATER TO BE TAKEN ABOARD LATE YESTERDAY.
