Background: INTRODUCTION: With the influx of Kampuchean refugees into Thailand, the Thai army has had to assign more and more men to checkpoint duty in the border province of Aranyaprathet.

SYNOPSIS: Army checkpoints are located on all roads and tracks leading in an out of Aranyaprathet and all vehicles are stopped and searched. Arms and ammunition being smuggled into Kampuchea are the army's first target. But they are involved in trying to stop the contraband movement of many other items as well. Sine the Vietnamese overthrew the Pol Pot government in Kampuchea, most of the goods in Phnom Penh's markets have been passing through Aranyaprathet province.

Searches at the checkpoints are thorough but courteous and travellers are delayed for a minimum amount of time. Consumer goods smuggled across the border into Kampuchea range from clothing to transistor radios. And the markets in the capital, Phnom Penh, are frequented by both Kampucheans and the soldiers of the occupying Vietnamese army.
