Background: THE RICE-RICH MEKONG DELTA HAS LONG BIENNA VIETCONG STRONGHOLD. FOR SEVERAL MONTHS NOW, SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES HAVE BEEN BATTLING THE VIETCONG FOR CONTROL OF THE AREA, WHICH HOUSES ABOUT 7,000,000 PEOPLE OR ALMOST HALF OF THE COUNTRY'S POPULATION.

THE ENTIRE MEKONG IS NOW WATER-LOGGED BECAUSE OF THE MONSOON SEASON WHICH IS ENTERING ITS SECOND MONTH. THE TROOPS ONLY WAY IN IS BY HELICOPTER.

IN THIS BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY, BETWEEN 70 TO 80 MILITARY MANOEUVRES PER WEEK ARE BEING HELD IN THE AREA. EACH OPERATION INVOLVES THOUSANDS OF TROOPS.

THE DELTA IS CRISS-CROSSED WITH RIVERS -- IMPORTANT HIGHWAYS WHERE FARMERS AND MERCHANTS TRADE.

LAST WEEK, VIETNAMESE TROOPS WERE HELICOPTERED INTO THE AREA TO OPEN UP THE MANG THIT CANAL TO THE FARMERS AND MERCHANTS. THE CANAL, IN VINH LONG PROVINCE, HAD BEEN IN VIETCONG CONTROL FOR SOME YEARS.

THE TROOPS USED TRACKER DOGS TO HUNT DOWN THE ELUSIVE VIETCONG. IN THEIR PURSUIT, THE TROOPS CAME UNDER SNIPER FIRE.

THE HOMES OF THE PADDY FARMERS WERE SEARCHED AND A VIETCONG FLAG WAS UNCOVERED.

THE SCATTERED FAMILIES IN THE MEKONG ARE KNOWN VIETCONG SYMPATHISERS. AT THE APPROACH OF VIETNAMESE TROOPS, THE MEN FLED -- POSSIBLY TO JOIN THE VIETCONG IN FIGHTING AGAINST THE TROOPS.

THE TRAINED DOGS, CONSIDERED AS TROOPS, FLUSHED OUT TWO GUERILLAS. THE SOLDIERS CAPTURED TWO OTHERS, INCLUDING A WOMAN. THEY WERE BOUND AND QUESTIONED. ONE GUERILLA, SUSPECTED OF TELLING LIES, RECEIVED A HARSH TREATMENT.

THE SAME HELICOPTERS WERE CALLED IN TO AIRLIFT THE TROOPS TO ANOTHER AREA WHERE THEY CONTINUED THEIR OPERATION.
