Background: While a Mexican band serenaded them U.S. President Lyndon Johnson, Vice President-Elect Humphrey, their aides and the press that travelled the campaign with them feasted on barbecued beef, chicken shrimp, biscuits, fried pies, beer and coffee in a post-election celebration Wednesday (5 November).
Both Mr. Johnson and Senator Humphrey were togged out in cowboy clothes, hats and boots and Mr Johnson took the Senator horseback riding. The Vice President-Elect is an admitted amateur equestrian , but he mad a valiant effort to keep up with Mr. Johnson as they rounded up some steers.
Both Mr. Johnson and Senator Humphrey spoke, exchanging high compliments, joshing each other and the press and saving a few serious words about the days ahead. No direct quotation was permitted.
But, for the most part, it was a day of fun dedicated to the Johnson-Humphrey landslide victory of the day before.
