Background: The annual Carnival(Mardi Gras) is Montevideo, the Uruguayan capital, on Friday (25 February) featured the popular "Candombe" parade known as Llamadas. Candombe is the name given to the ancient tribal music played by the country's negro population. During the carnival season folkloric ensembles gather for the liamades and thread their way through the crowded streets of the Barrio Palermo section of the city, playing and singing. Where the better-known Carnival in Rio de Janeiro usually lasts for three days, its counterpart in Montevideo is spread over at least two weeks of constant festivities.
