Background: SYNOPSIS: JERUSALEM, Israel. May 31st: Mr. Joel Brand, the wartime Hungarian Jewish leader, today told the court at the Eichmann trial of his meetings with British officials in Cairo to discuss the "blood against goods" deal with Eichmann. Eichmann had offered to save a million Jews in exchange for ten thousand trucks.

Brand described his efforts in Istanbul and later in Egypt to persuade allied officials to take some action on the offer. He told them that twelve thousand Jews a day were being deported to the gas chambers but, he said, he was driven frantic by doubts that the offer was genuine.

Judge Halevi asked Brand about his meetings with British officials in Cairo, and Brand described his meeting in the Anglo-Egyptian Club with Lord Moyne, then British Deputy Minister of State in the Middle East (later assassinated by two Palestinian Jews.)
Judge Halevi asked what Lord Moyne told Brand, and Brand replied in English; "What should I do with those million Jews? Where should I put them". He added that this took place in the late summer of 1944 - the exact date he could not recall.

Earlier Brand's wife had been asked if the Jewish Committee in Budapest had ever considered liquidating Eichmann. She replied "Yes, we had reports of what happened to partisans and others who tried or conspired against a German", and added: "We asked, what will we achieve? We were a committee for aid and rescue, not heroes". Mrs. Brand said the committee did not know if killing Eichmann would help their people. They feared that "the mills would continue to work, maybe at an increased pace", and later they saw that Czechoslovakia after the rising of the partisans, "not only those caught were killed, but the whole camp was immediately sent to Auschwitz".
