Background: The traditional warm-up tournament before the Wimbledon tennis championships has opened at then Queen's Club in London. And there were some surprises in the first round of the men's singles, with two seeded losing to unranked competitors. One star lucky to survive was American Brian Gottfried, who met |Australian John James on Wednesday (11 June).

SYNOPSIS: Gottfried, seeded number thirteen, and serving, was expected to have an easy opening match against James. The Australian had failed to qualify, but was allowed one of the last two places in the draw because of his computer ranking.

James made a superb start with several powerful driving shots which unsettled the experienced American.

The Australian went on the win the first set 6-4. And, by taking a 4-2 lead in the second, ha appeared likely to cause the biggest upset of the day. But then Gottfried began a tenacious fight back.

The American and finally squared the match at one-set all. He was now well in command, and soon swept to a 5-3 advantage in the deciding set.

James did not win another game. And the American's victory--by 4-6, 7-5, 6-3--allowed him to gain more valuable competition on grass before the Wimbledon championships begin on June 23.
