    Heavy rain over the past three months has killed scores of people and left hundreds of thousands homeless in Bangladesh.In the east of the country, flash floods hit hundreds of square kilometres (miles) destroying more than 35-thousand houses.Official figures put the death toll at eighty-six.At least 800-thousand tonnes (tons) of rice were lost in the floods.The government of President Hossain Mohammed Ershad has organised emergency relief teams, dispatching them to affected areas with supplies of bread, clothing and tents.Areas near the capital, Dhaka, were also hit; scores of homes in nearby Karwan Bazaar were partially submerged.Residents in Kamrangir Char were among hundreds who left by small boats from the flood-affected areas.The League of Red Cross Societies and the Bangladesh Red Cross Society has helped in relief operations.On July 11 hundreds of film personalities, singers and people from the arts gave street performances in Dhaka to publicise Ershad's campaign for aid to the estimated 1.5 million people afflicted by the floods.
