Background: Crowds gathered from early morning outside the fashionable church of St. Honore d'Eylau, in the west of Paris, for the funeral of Christian Dior today. His body had been brought by air from Montecatini, north Italy, where he died. The burial was to be in the family grave at Caillan, southern France.

True to custom, the left of the nave was filled with men and the right with women, all with invitations. In the rest of the church 3000 mourners were crowded.

About 4000, mostly women, lined the streets around the church, the interior of which was draped in black with the monogram C.D. The coffin was covered with lillies of the valley, Dior's favourite flower.

After the service was over one of the first to leave was the Duchess of Windsor, who was accompanied by Mrs Pamela Churchill, followed by Dior's family, M. Boussac, the industrialist who backed his, first venture, and Mme Boussac, and all the great couturiers of Paris.

The well-known actor, Daniel Gelin was there, as was Jean Cocteau, the director.
