Background: The 1982 Soviet Gymnastic championships held at Chelyabinsk from September 15 to 19 in the Ural mountains, included many young and talented competitors and undoubtedly some future world stars. It was a special occasion for the women participants, as it was 50 years since the first women were allowed to compete in this championship. The overall winner of the women's events, 17-year-old Natalya Yurchenko, has been described by her coach Vyacheslav Rastorotskiy as remarkably similar in style to former Olympic and World Champion Ludmila Turischeva, a one-time student of his. Second place went to 14-year-old Olga Mostepanova, winner of the Riga International Championship in the spring of this year and overall third at the European Junior Championship. Albina Shishova, also a student at Rastorotskiy's winner Yurchenko who was the competition's star. She held a lead far ahead of the other competitors and her grace and style in the floor exercises puts her into the forefront of world class gymnastics.
