    TRANSCRIPT:

TOW (SEQ 4): "I looked out the window and after I called the office I could see white smoke pouring out the window. Lots of white grey smoke and I heard what sounded like an explosion, and then I ducked from the seat and that was it.

INTERVIEWER: "Were you injured at all?"

TOW: "No just frayed, just frayed nerves. I'm lucky, I'm glad I wasn't as you see where the office is in relation to the other office. I was very lucky.

LINDSAY (SEQ 10): "I want to say this; that I regard this as the most dastardly possible act. It is reprehensible. It cannot be tolerated in our city and I think it's a very sad thing that out police department and our police officers who have done more than any other group in our city to hold things together and to prevent violence should be subjected to this kind of thing".

Background: A powerful dynamite explosion ripped through New York;s Central police headquarters on Tuesday night (9 June) wrecking part of the second floor but injuring only five people. The injured, three policemen and two civilians, were reported to have been only slightly hurt.

Police described the device as a "sophisticated bomb" with a time mechanism. The blast, which caused about 100,000 dollars U.S. (GBP40,000 sterling) damage to the building was in a men's room on the second floor near where high-ranking police and administrative officials have their offices.

Windows were blown out and walls inside the building shattered. Nearby shop fronts were smashed and there was minor damage to apartment buildings in the immediate vicinity.

Mayor John Lindsay went to the scene and described it as disgraceful that such a thing could happen in New York.

William Tow was in his car parked outside the building when the explosion occurred. He described what happened:
