An award honouring the memory of the late Senator Robert F. Kennedy was given to a Salvadoran Human Rights group said strong reservations from the US State Department. The Monsignor Oscar Romero Mothers' Committee was chosen by the RFK memorial foundation from among more than 40 potential recipients world-wide. Receiving the award from Senator Edward M. Kennedy, on behalf of the committee, was Emelina De Garcia. She told the gathering she had been tortured and raped by eight members of a Salvadoran death squad three years ago. Earlier this week, the State Department rejected visa applications from four other Salvadorans who were to participate in the award ceremony - saying its decision was based on the "applicant's personal advocacy if violence and actual participation in terrorist activities".
