Background: Continuing his South East Asian tour U.S. Vice-President Johnson arrived in Manila, Philippines, May 13, for a one-day visit to confer with President Garcia.
After Mr. Johnson reviewed a guard of honour, he was welcomed a speech by Foreign Secretary Serrano and the Mayor of Manila.
Through crowded streets, Mr. Johnson drove to Malacanang Palace to meet President Carlos Garcia at a private luncheon. From there the Vice-President left for Jose Rizal Memorial to lay a wreath during a short ceremony. The crowded programme ended for the day with his address to a joint session of congress in which he pledged America would continue to help Sasians in the war against poverty, illiteracy and disease.
The Vice-President said the U.S. "will proceed either alone or with our free world friends to preserve our position in Asia.
Two days later on the tour, the Vice-President learned of the coup against the pro-American government in South Korea.
