REPORTER: 'Most demonstrators against the Government in Mexico City are staged by left-wing students of the University of Mexico. The latest demonstration erupted into violence when a right-wing group moved in and started shooting. Eight people were killed and over two hundred were wounded Some students say the gunmen were undercover Government police, and that's why the regular police took no action. The students say the political party that has controlled Mexico for 40 years won't listen to them."
TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 6): GIRL STUDENT: "Here, we would like to choose our President -- but it is not true. They chose someone; we have to put up with him and all the things the Government say. They do it and the people have to put up with it and no matter if they want or not it's.....good for them."
(SEQ. 7): MALE STUDENT: "We have to try to resolve all the problems using the head and not using the fight....that's all we have to do."
REPORTER: "The Government is taking the students seriously. The President says he will listen to them but he does not promise changes. Speaking through an interpreter, he denied charges that the rioters were Government police."
(SEQ. 11): ENGLISH INTERPRETATION OF PRESIDENT ECHEVERIA: "There is no basis for this, there is no proof. This is unfair, that the people who are against the Government and who have wanted to create an opinion against the Government, very wrongly so, because the Government has never been against them and willing to listen to all opinion whether they are right or whether they are wrong. The police.....did not participate because it had been instructed not to participate."
REPORTER: "What would you do to punish these people?"
INTERPRETATION: "I will categorically punish the people that are responsible as revealed by the investigation of the Attorney-General."

Background: Last week's death riots in Mexico City happened when left-wing student demonstrators were attacked by a right-wing group -- reported to be members of a semi-official para-military organisation co-operating with police. According to on-the-spot reporters, the right-wing elements were armed with machine guns, rifles and bamboo sticks -- and acted in full view of regular police who did nothing to avert either the clash or the subsequent killings. This film follows up the riot with an attempt to establish the background to it, and shows interviews with University of Mexico students and Mexican President Luis Echeveria, who denied that the right-wing group were Government police of any sort.
