Background: West Germany beat England by three goals to one in the first leg of the Nations Cup Quarter Final match at Wembley Saturday evening (April 29).
It was the first victory ever by a West German side against England on English soil.
Confounding the experts by playing attacking football from start to finish the West German side never looked in danger from an uninspired English team once they settled down after scrappy, and nearly costly, defence coverage in the early minutes.
West Germany scored through amateur Uli Hoeness in the 26th minute when his shot from twenty yards (20 metres) was deflected off England defender Norman Hunter.
They held onto the goal advantage until the 77th minute when Francis Lee scored, finished after a blasting drive from Colin Bell went through goalkeeper Sepp Maier's hands.
But West Germany settled the result with two goals in the final six minutes - one from a penalty taken by Gunter Netzer - although Gordon Banks got his fingers to the ball and knocked it against the post - the other from a well-taken shot by striker Gerd Muller, who scored West Germany's winning goal against England in the 1970 World Cup in Mexico.
As England crashed before 100-thousand spectators at Wembley, the other favourites to win the European Soccer Championship, defending champions Italy were putting in a lack-lustre performance in another first leg Quarter Final game against Belgium, in Milan. The match ended in a goalless draw.
