Background: The body of a murdered Israeli diplomat, Colonel Yoseph Alon, was flown home to Tel Aviv, Israel from the United states on Monday (2 July). Colonel Alon was shot dead outside his suburban Washington home while returning from a party.

His widow, Devorah, and her three daughters accompanied the body aboard a United States Presidential C-135 aircraft. Waiting at the airport was Israeli Defence Minister, Moshe Dayan, military chiefs of staff and high ranking Government officials.

General Dayan told reporters at Tel Aviv he was sure the killing was an Arab guerrilla assassination. He said he couldn't see anyone else doing it and there could be no other motive for killing Colonel Alon. General Dayan said he expected foreign countries not only to do all they can to prevent such incidents, but also to prevent guerrillas from operating on their territory.

SYNOPSIS: Mrs. Devorah Alon, widow of the Israeli diplomat killed in Washington, accompanied her husband's body home to Israel on Monday. Mrs. Alon, her three daughters and the coffin carrying Colonel Alon's body were carried aboard a United States Presidential aircraft.

They were met at Tel Aviv airport by Israeli Defence Minister, Moshe Dayan, military chiefs of staff and high ranking government officials. Israeli accusations that the killing was an Arab guerrilla assassination began at the airport. General Dayan said he couldn't see anyone else doing it and there could be no other motive.

Colonel Alon was shot dead outside his suburban Washington home while returning from a party.

The funeral service was to be held in Israel the day after the body was returned. General Dayan said Israel expected foreign countries to prevent guerrillas operating on their territory. It was not enough to do all they could to protect Israelis from such incidents.

The killing has been described by the israeli press as opening a new chapter in what was called a continuing war of terror. The incident has been discussed by the Israeli cabinet and President Nixon has promised all possible assistance with investigations into the killing. No details of the Israeli cabinet talks were disclosed.
