Background: Boxing...and South Korea's Park Chan Hee successfully defended his World Boxing Council (WBC) flyweight title in Seoul on Sunday (20 May) when he beat Tsutomu Igarashi of Japan. It was a unanimous points decision.

SYNOPSIS: Four thousand people packed the Jangchung area to see Park make his first defence of the title which he tool off Mexican Miguel Canto in March. But the champion made an uncertain start, and in the early rounds it was Igarashi, in the dark shorts who was on the attack.

Park, still suffering the effects of a hand injury sustained when he took the title, seemed reluctant to take the fight to his opponent. But when Igarashi attacked, the champion scored well with his counter punches.

The Japanese challenger tried to use his greater height and reach to keep out of Park's range. But Park who is unbeaten since turning professional in 1977 began piled up points with jabs to the head and some good rights.

Igarashi who is the reigning Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation flyweight champion fought gamely.

Park took control from the tenth round, and in the eleventh and fourteenth had Igarashi staggering from a hail of punches. American referee Dick Young warned the Challenger frequently about butting, but Igarashi continued using his head to the end of the fight.

The Japanese fighter had made a brave attempt, but was outclassed. All three judges gave the decision to Park by a wide margin. Igarashi's consolation was a purse of ten thousand dollars. The champion received forty thousand dollars and this trophy.
