    THE WOMEN'S 80 METRES HURDLES WENT TO MARY RAND, SHOWING THE VERSATILITY THAT GAVE HER A GOLD MEDAL IN THE LONG JUMP AT THE TOKYO OLYMPICS. SHE WON FROM TEAM-MATE P. JONES, BOTH RECORDING 11.3 SECONDS, WELL OUTSIDE THE WORLD RECORD OF 10.5 SECONDS. THIRD WAS HUNGARY'S A. KOVACS IN 11.9 SECONDS.

    THE FIRST TWO IN THE MEN'S 100 METRES ALSO RECORDED THE SAME TIME. BARRY KELLY WON IN 10.9 SECONDS FROM HUNGARY'S H. ROZSNYA I. THE THIRD PLACING, BRITAIN'S MENZIES CAMPBELL, CLOCKED THE SAME TIME, TOO.

    FOR THE 3,000 CROWD, THE OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE OF THE EVENING WAS FRED ALSOP'S WIN IN THE TRIPLE JUMP. A LEAP OF 54 FEET 7 1/2 INCHES (16.65 METRES) BETTERED THE BRITISH RECORD, BUT WAS DISALLOWED BECAUSE OF A FOLLOWING WIND. HUNGARIANS FILLED THE MINOR PLACINGS; H. KALOCSAI, SECOND, LEAPT 52 FEET 4-1/4 INCHES (15.92 METRES) AND D. IVANOV, THIRD, 50 FEET 1 INCH (15.26 METRES).

    IN THE 10,000 METRES JIM ALDER, A 25-YEAR-OLD HOSPITAL MAINTENANCE ENGINEER, FINISHED AS TWO OPPONENTS WERE BEGINNING. THE FINAL LAP. HIS TIME OF 28 MINUTES 53 SECONDS WAS ONLY SIX-TENTHS OF A SECOND OUTSIDE THE BRITISH RECORD, BUT MORE THAN A MINUTE OUTSIDE THE WORLD RECORD.

    BY THE END OF THE EVENING, THE BRITISH MEN, WINNING SIX EVENTS TO FOUR, LED THE HUNGARIANS 53 POINTS TO 51, AND THE BRITISH WOMEN, WITH VICTORIES IN THREE OF THE FIVE EVENTS, LED 28 TO 27. THE MEETING ENDS TOMORROW AFTERNOON.
