CHAMP: "Hundreds of Molotov cocktails spun through the dark night sky...(INDISTINCT) thrown by young black Bermudians who slipped in and out of view as if by magic. The police reaction was always the same, holding their ground and dispersing any large groups of rioters with tear gas or smoke grenades. That contest continued throughout Hamilton all nights. It was a chess game, and the city was the board, with first one side, then another claiming control over the different squares of the city. Riot police were constantly under attack as hundreds of young men and women linked the hangings with racial discrimination and alleged oppression... (INDISTINCT) bricks and bottles, overturning automobiles and attacking businesses, they shouted anti-white and anti-British slogans. Frequently the milling crowds, always just out of police reach, warned of a blood-bath if Bermuda was not turned over to an independent black majority government. Fire bombings were scattered throughout Hamilton; flames often hung high over the city's rooftops, police and firemen unable to penetrate the demonstrators. When they battle their way through to the fire sites it was, as in this case often too late to save the building.

The hotel Southampton Princess is the island's newest and largest hotel, and, although the fire has not been confirmed as arson, the coincidences of the evening are certain to have an injurious effect on this island's tourist industry. At sunrise the plight of many of the guests was graphically told in these pathetic ropes fashioned from bed-sheets, as those trapped considered this as an option to the dense smoke. Fortunately, firemen made that gamble unnecessary. Sunrise ended the fighting but not the visible signs of tension.

These two men were hanged. The crowds protest was lost and there are now fears of continued rioting with the next nightfall."

Background: Rioting flared for the third night in a row in Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda on Saturday (3 December). Some of the ??? island's 350 police had to use ??? gas to try to control ??? of rioting teenagers who threw Molotov cocktails (petrol bombs) at buildings. Security forces arrested some 20 people for violating the dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed after the first night's unrest, which followed the hangings for murder of two members of the Black Cadre terrorist organisation. At the request of the Governor, Sir Peter Rowbotham, the British government will fly about 150 troops to Bermuda to help restore order. Henry Champ of CTV Canada describes the violence.
