Background: CHAIRMAN MAO TSE-TUNG, MAKING HIS FIRST REPORTED PUBLIC APPEARANCE SINCE LAST MAY, RECEIVED THUNDEROUS ACCLAMATION FROM SEVERAL HUNDRED-THOUSAND PEOPLE GATHERED IN PEKING ON WEDNESDAY (1 OCTOBER) TO CELEBRATE THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC. THE 75-YEAR-OLD LEADER, LOOKING IN EXCELLENT HEALTH, APPEARED BESIDE HIS SUCCESSOR-DESIGNATE VICE-CHAIRMAN LIN PIAO WHEN THESE SCENES WERE FILMED BY AN ITALIAN TELEVISION CREW IN PEKING.

THE APPEARANCE OF CHAIRMAN MAO, WHO LED HIS FOLLOWERS TO VICTORY OVER THE CHINESE NATIONALISTS 20 YEARS AGO, SCOTCHED RECENT RUMOURS THAT HE WAS SERIOUSLY ILL OR EVEN DEAD.

HE SMILED AND WAVED AS THE CROWD IN THE HUGE TIEN AN MEN SQUARE (SQUARE OF THE GATE OF HEAVENLY PEACE) CHANTED "LONG LIVE CHAIRMAN MAO".

THOUGH HE DID NOT SPEAK AT THE CELEBRATIONS, THE CHINESE LEADER LISTENED TO VICE-CHAIRMAN LIN PIAO APPEAL TO THE CHINESE PEOPLE TO HEIGHTEN THEIR VIGILANCE AND TO BE PREPARED TO REPEL ANY INVADING NATION.

HE WARNED THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION THAT THE CHINESE PEOPLE WOULD FIGHT TO THE FINISH SHOULD THEIR COUNTRY BE INVADED. BUT HE ADDED THAT THE CHINESE WOULD NEVER ATTACK UNLESS THEIR COUNTRY HAD BEEN ATTACKED FIRST. CHINA HAD ALWAYS UPHELD THE PRINCIPLES OF PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE IN RELATIONS BETWEEN COUNTRIES, HE SAID.

THE UNITED STATES AND THE SOVIET UNION WERE ACCUSED OF COLLUDING TO ENGINEER A WAR OF AGGRESSION AGAINST CHINA AND OF FLAGRANTLY RESORTING TO NUCLEAR BLACKMAIL.

CHINESE ARMY HEROES FROM THE VIOLENT BORDER CLASHES WITH THE SOVIET UNION EARLIER THIS YEAR JOINED THE TWO LEADERS ON THE REVIEWING STAND.

FOLLOWING VICE-CHAIRMAN LIN'S SPEECH, THE LEADERS REVIEWED A TWO-HOUR PARADE IN WHICH 100,000 PEOPLE TOOK PART - INCLUDING MEMBERS OF THE PEOPLE'S LIBERATION ARMY, WORKERS, STUDENTS, ARTISTS AND RED GUARDS WAVING COPIES OF THE THOUGHTS OF CHAIRMAN MAO.
