Background: Youth from Zambian schools and the National Service expressed support for President Kaunda by carrying placards aloft at a rally to mark Youth Day in Lusaka on Monday (11 August).
The official ceremony was attended by members of the ruling party, together with representatives from educational and youth bodies.
Formalities began with the arrival of a torch bearer who handed the flaming baton to Secretary General of the Party, Mr. Grey Zulu, who later addressed the rally.
A group of women from Holland who are touring Zambia as guests of the government, were present to see the youths dressed in the immaculate uniforms of their various occupations.
SYNOPSIS: Members of the ruling Zambian party, nurses, students and National Service youths assembled at the Freedom Fighter statue in Lusaka on Monday. With them were a group of women visitors from Holland who turned out to watch the Zambians celebrating Youth Day. Some of the students carried banners expressing support for President Kenneti Kaunda and his Government's policies.
Formalities began when a torch bearer arrived at the site, and handed the flaming baton he carried to the Secretary-General of the ruling party, Mr. Grey Zulu.
Later the audience, which included foreign diplomats, heard Mr. Zulu address the rally. The encouragement of youth has always been important in Zambia, which is itself a young republic.
Traditionally, after the rally, a sporting competition was held and trophies presented.
