Background: The reigning English soccer champions, Arsenal, regained some of their tarnished glory today (Saturday). After four games without a victory, Arsenal notched up a 2-1 win over their lowly London rivals, crystal Place. But it was a hollow victory -- Place haven't beaten any of their London neighbours in 20 attempts since wining promotion to the First Division three seasons ago.
Arsenal were two goals up in the first 35 minutes. Eddie Kelly scored the first after the Place goal had survived a barrage of shots. The second was a fine goal by George Graham. A courageous rally by Palace was rewarded six minutes after the interval when John Craven scored with a fierce drive.
SYNOPSIS: Crystal Palace, paying right to left, visited London neighbours Arsenal on Saturday. Though Arsenal last season completed a memorable double of the First Division championship and the F.A. cup, they have hit a lean spell recently and were without a victory in their previous four matches. Palace have an even worse record -- they haven't won against a London club in the last twenty attempts.
Most of the early attacking came from Arsenal. After laying siege to the Place goal, the home side went ahead through Eddie Kelly in the sixth minute.
On the half hour, Arsenal attacked up the left wing And the ball was laid on for George Graham to put the home side two ahead
Place made a courageous second half rally. John Craven made it two-one just after half time. But there was no further scoring.
