    Background: CANTERBURY, U.K.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr. Robert Runcie, met a Russian Orthodox Church delegation at the Old Palace, Canterbury, on January 11. Among the delegation of 12 was the Metropolitan Philaret of Kiev and the Georgian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Konstantin of Urbniya. The purpose of the visit, at the invitation of Dr. Runcie as acting President of the British Council of Churches, was to acquaint the delegation with British church and secular life. At the same time, the guests exchanged with their hosts details of Christian life and witness in the Soviet Union. A spokesman said it was hoped the visit would provide an opportunity to consider what specific Christian contributions could and should be made in the search for world peace and justice. The delegation toured Canterbury Cathedral, and was to meet the Dean and Chapter of St Paul's Cathedral, London. Visits to the main denominational headquarters of the British Churches were an important part of the programme.
