Background: Heavy rains caused the Jaguaribe River to swell to immense proportions, Mar 27/29, and the mighty Brazilian Oros Dam was not enough to prevent the cities of Jaguaribe and Limoeriro being flooded although a major disaster was averted by engineers leaking off water from the dam.

Anticipating possible major floods, populations of the cities had been evacuated to higher grounds where they were kept supplied with food by Air - force planes.

Losses of crops and goods were high but not as great as expected.

The dam, still under construction, was about 100 ft. high. Total height was to be 200 ft. Reconstruction of the dam will be started at once.
