    Background: SHIZUNZAI, HOKKAIDO, JAPAN

Japan successfully test-fired its first nationally developed ground-to-air missile on August 6 at Shizunzai, Hokkaido, in Northern Japan. A Defence Ministry statement said the short-range anti-missile (SAM) missile, developed entirely with domestic technology, destroyed a target plane twenty seconds after it was launched. The approximately 200,000 US dollar missile is 2.7 metres (3 yards) long and fifteen centimetres (six inches) in diameter. Its range is up to thirty-five kilometres (about 23 miles) at a speed of five kilometres (about three miles) as officers and technicians from the country's self-defence force looked on.
