Background: Though the Belgian strike continued to lose momentum in its 17th day, Jan 5, an estimated 25,000 workers marched through the streets of Antwerp in protest over Government austerity measures aimed at offsetting the loss of the Congo.

The strike-leading Socialist Party in Opposition appealed again for non-violence. Police were out in force, as in Brussels, where demonstrating hooligans fell back in retreat after a clash with them. The strike in Antwerp left its mark: uncollected garbage and litter.

Later reports from Brussels said King Baudouin's talks with political leaders had persuaded Prime Minister Eyskens to agree to a compromise to end the strike but no details of the talks were immediately available.
