Background: Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia yesterday (Friday) flew to Mombasa from the African summit conference in Kinshasa for talks with President Kenyatta of Kenya.
The Emperor was met at the airport by President Kenyatta, who did not himself attend the Organisation of African Unity summit conference.
The two leaders will have talks on general African problems, with the emphasis on questions raised at the Kinshasa meeting. Reuter reports that they were also expected to review their relations with their common neighbour, Somalia, with whom both Kenya and Ethiopia have had border differences for some time.
Kenya and Somalia are due to have talks on their border dispute later this year, with President Kaunda of Zambia acting as mediator. The Zambian leader also arrived in Mombasa yesterday shortly after the Emperor's aircraft touched down.
But before the leaders got down to their talks, there was a big welcome at the airport for the Emperor. He arrived ... with his pet dog Lulu... to find a cheering crowd waiting to see him inspect a guard of honour mounted by the Kenya Rifles.
