Background: In Cairo on Sunday (18 May), Egypt's top player, Ismail El Shafei, showed his winning style in one of the final matches of the Davis Cup between Egypt and Hungary.
Shafei restored Egypt's hopes in the Davis Cup, European Zone B Group, by defeating Hungary's Balazs Taroczy. But the final match saw Egypt pushed out of the series.
Hungary's S. Baranyi defeated Egypt's Ali El Dawoody and won the finals for Hungary by 3-2.
The Shafei-Teroczy match was largely a battle of services. At the start of the day, Hungary was leading Egypt two matches to one. But midway through the first set, it was apparent that Shafei had the strokes to win. he took the first set 9-7 and the second 6-2. In the final set, after talking with his coach, the Hungarian showed more fight. Nonetheless, it was El Shafei whose service held up longest to give his the set 15-13.
But Egypt's hopes were dashed in the final match. Hungary will now go onto the Zone B semi-finals and play Czechoslovakia.
