Background: From South-east Asia comes an increasing number of horror stories regarding the plight of the Vietnamese refugees. But not all the refugees face uncertain futures. One story with a happy ending is that of one hundred. Vietnamese who have been taken in by Israel.
SYNOPSIS: After spending a month in a special reception camp, the refugees were taken to their new permanent homes at Haifa, on Wednesday (20 June). All the heads of the families now have jobs, and many have begun learning Hebrew. After their harrowing experiences escaping from Vietnam, they were obviously happy at the prospect of setting into their comfortable new homes.
Israel was one of the first countries to accept refugees from Vietnamese two years ago when an Israeli captain picked up nearly one hundred of them from a boat adrift at sea. And this week Prime Minister Menachem Begin agreed to take two hundred more.
Mr. Begin said Israel has strong sympathy with the refugees because so many Jews suffered a similar plight before founding their homeland.
