Background: The U. S. Naval Aerospace Recovery Facility, at El Centro, California, is currently conducting tests to evaluate the "Parafoil" for possible military use.

The "Parafoil" is one of several "second generation" parachute type gliding devices which, although of fabric construction, displays the general characteristics of an air foil. Its essential feature is that it provides a gliding descent rather than a more vertical descent as in the case with conventional parachutes.

The "Parafoil" was developed from a basic design originally patented by Mr. Domina Jalbert (a kite manufacturer in Florida). It was brought to its present stage of development by the Aerospace Department of the University of Notre Dame under the guidance of Doctor John Nicolaides.

Tests are currently being conducted at the Aerospace Recovery Facility under the provisions of a Navy Department contract.

The "Parafoil" being tested at El Centro is 1 1/2 times the size of an ordinary parachute. The wing is 26.8 feet by 13.4 feet, with a 360 square foot top area. The edge is curved like the wing of an airplanes, except that it is non rigid.
