Background: The Japanese version of what one might call the European Christmas spirit was captured by Visnews in Tokyo Dec. 17 as a modern Santa Claus arrives by helicopter to share out a hefty bag of thrilling presents.
Christmas with huge trees and all the well-known trappings of a merry yuletide has become very popular in primarily Buddhist Japan, although the religious Christian background is understood only by few people in this Far Eastern country.
But there is one feature which easily bridges the gap between East and West - in Tokyo as in European capitals the children and above all the many lonely orphans profit most from the festive occasion.
The big departmental stores hum with customer-attracting Christmas activities. Displays are seasonal and to top it all there is Santa Claus, - busy hula-hooping.
