Background: Visnews filmed King Hussein of Jordan as he inspected work on the East Ghor irrigation canal east of the River Jordan near Lake Tiberias Feb 23.
The King was received at the site by members of the Jordanian Development Board. Workers cheered as he took a closer look at the canal bed.
Work under the East Ghor Canal Scheme started August 7 last year and progresses fast. 850 labourers are on the job every day.
A five-year plan envisages the irrigation of more than 30,000 acres of rich soil along the eastern stretches of the Jordan valley known as the East Ghor region. The canal is being built from north to south starting at the Yarmuk river near Lake Tiberias and running parallel to the River Jordan down to the Dead sea. Nearly 5,500 million cubic feet of Yarmuk river water will be used for irrigation every year.
Further development includes a storage reservoir and a diversion dam in the Yarmuk. A planned syphon crossing through the River Jordan into Israeli territory is still subject to Israel's approval.
